The deity Maui wielded a renowned hook named Mānaiakalani, attempting to unite the islands by hooking them together, hence weaving the makau into the fabric of Hawaiian mythology. Today, the Makau signifies a profound connection to the sea, its inhabitants, and the delicate equilibrium of life on the Islands.
